What Words Alone Can't Say
by Nathan Wende
More often than not
Words can't describe
My feelings for you
Which live deep inside
Feelings that grow stronger
With every beat of my heart
I knew you were the one for me
Right from the very start
There isn't a moment
In the day I can find
Where you face and smile
Don't appear in my mind
I long to be with you
And hold you so tight
To protect you and love you
Everyday and each night
We share something so special
Each and every day
A feeling in our souls
Words alone can't say

I realised that the Singapore education system isn't all that flawless after all. From the teaching of the chinese language to the requirements of us teachers, i have found so many loopholes. Teachers now hold the awful responsibility of delivering what they have learnt to their pupils. Teachers have this huge burden of ensuring their students pass with flying colours. However, how is this possible when there are flaws even in the Chinese language textbook? Shouldn't the books be accepted by all chinese teachers? Why is it that even workbooks and textbooks are not acceptable by NIE teachers' standards?
Had my longest ever lesson at NIE today, sitting at the lecture theatre for three hours straight without even going out for a toilet break. Yes, teachers at NIE are very passionate when it comes to teaching. Yes, they are very knowledgeable and intelligent and what have you. Perhaps, they are too passionate. They could talk on and on for 3 hours without even stopping for a toilet break or a water break. Yes, we're nearing the semester and there's a need to wrap up the syllabus but the problem is, why wait till there's 5 weeks left to holidays and you start rushing like nobodies' business? Granted, you were ill last week but what about the other lecturers? One either wastes too much time asking questions or the other's too "
lor soh" spending an hour revising the previous week's lecture leaving just one and a half hours to complete a total of 60 powerpoint slides leaving us all confused and irritated at the end of the lesson. The student suffers when the teacher comes unprepared for the lesson. How very true.
Never mind, from young we've learnt that students have no say in whatever the teacher's teaching, we students have got no say in how the teacher teaches as long as he/she completes the syllabus. If only schools were as liberal as the US government, i would have stood up in class and corrected each and every teacher and tell them our feelings. What a thought. What a dream. Ah, just live with it i guess. I just hope i'll be a better teacher in time to come.
P.S.
